The Public Restrooms in Venice
You know that the Venetians invented the anti-urinal to prevent the men from urinating against walls?
The explanation is pretty as author Tiziano Scarpa illustrated in his small jewel of a guide “Venezia è un pesce” (Venice is a Fish), an absolute must read before coming to Venice:
“In certain corners out of the way, one can spot mysterious stone projections, in coated or visible bricks approximately a little more than a meter tall, shaped like stony slabs resemble the triangle of a descending roof, those in bricks in the quarter of a small, rounded dome, in an edge of flat giantess loaf, in a big quarter of panettone.
The functioning of the pieces of roofing and dome on the other hand is more ingenious: they are designed to make splash back spatters on the poor person of service and especially to make re-cast the channels of his wee on its feet.
In effect, often these anti-public urinals do not arrive up to the paving; the lower edge is ordinarily suspended in around thirty centimeters of the soil.
[...] Children, we did not know that were ancient anti-urinals, of Restrooms of Duchamp upside down, anti-urinals: they played it with the skill of the football (soccer?) players, which they made slip one after another and that they caught each in our tower when they landed the one on other one.
his game had a name: scainèa, "Scalinella" (small staircase), to mean the appearance of a ski jump of this slanting steps.”
