Sant'Andrea Bank and Canal In 1329, four Venetian noblemen, Francesca Corraro, Elisabetta Gradenigo, Elisabetta Soranzo and Maddalena Malipiero, obtained permission to build along the Rio “Cao de Zirada”, an oratory and houses serving as a refuge for women living in poverty, under the name of Andrea Apostolo (Apostle Saint Andrew).
This is how the district, the canal, the bridge, the Fondamenta and the adjacent Campo took the name of “Sant’Andrea”.
This pious help to the Venetians in need continued until 1684.
