Igshaan Adams « Bonteheuwel » Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
Igshaan Adams was born in 1982 in South Africa, where he lives and works.
His work is exhibited at the Arsenal Corderie in Venice.
The artist grew up in Bonteheuwel, a former black ghetto in Cape Town, South Africa.
Bonteheuwel is represented here in the form of a giant tapestry made with local products sewn together: pieces of wood and fabric cleverly intertwined with shells and plastic beads create a colourful landscape crossed by large diagonals.
These diagonals are a picture of what Adams calls “the lines of desire”, the dirt lines of the makeshift paths taken on foot by black communities that were separated from their workplace by a lack of communication routes.
