Mrinalini Mukherjee, “Devi, Rudra and Vanshree” Venice Biennale Art Exhibition
The works of Mrinalini Mukherjee (1949-2015, India) are exhibited in the central pavilion of the Biennale at the Giardini.
Born in Bombay in 1949, after the partition of India, Mrinalini Mukherjee is an artist's daughter who grew up in a utopian community in Bengali.
Mrinalini uses her remarkable mastery of traditional weaving by hand to make her sculptures in hemp fibre woven using the macramé technique.
Devi (1982), Rudra (1982) and Vanshree (1994) exceed two meters high, presenting themselves as three magnificent deities full of sensuality inspired by Indian statuary.
Three powerful figures of sacred female sexuality.
