Max Ernst was born in April 1891 in Brühl, Germany. He began studying philosophy at the University of Bonn in 1909 but quickly gave up on them to devote himself solely to art.
Art did not prevent him from taking an interest in psychology at the same time.
Max Ernst discovered Pablo Picasso's works, Vincent Van Gogh, Edward Munch and Paul Cézanne during the exhibition "Sonderbund" in Cologne in 1912.
In 1913, he met Guillaume Apollinaire and Robert Delaunay and left for Paris.
In 1914, Max Ernst became friends with Jean Arp, a friendship that lasted throughout his life.
Max Ernst exhibited for the first time in Paris in 1921 at the "Au Sans Pareil" gallery.
At the beginning of the 1920s, he became involved in the surrealist movement alongside Paul Eluard and André Breton.
Max Ernst collaborated with Joan Miró to make drawings for Russian ballets master Serge Diaghilev in 1926.
In 1930 he worked with Salvador Dalí and Luis Buñuel for the film "The Golden Age".
In 1932 Max Ernst exhibited at Julien Levy's gallery in New York and 1936 at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
In 1939 he was arrested in France as a foreign enemy and imprisoned in an internment camp from which he was not released until two years later.
Max Ernst then left France for the United States with Peggy Guggenheim to encounter other problems since he was again arrested on suspicion of espionage by the FBI.
He got released thanks to Peggy Guggenheim's relations and the proceeding of a prosecutor.
Max Ernst and Peggy Guggenheim were married in 1942, which lasted only a short time.
