Amedeo Modigliani “The Woman in a Sailor Shirt” (La femme en Blouse Marine) Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice
Painting - Oil on Canvas (55 x 35 cm) 1916It is not known who was Modigliani's model for this young woman in a sailor.
“The Woman in a Sailor Shirt” is a contrasting painting, which uses the dark side of the blouse and hair to highlight the young woman's skin.
Similarly, the white and curved stripes of her sailor shirt's collar are particularly present to "open" the blouse on the base of the neck and guide the look towards the face of the model, like a flower in a vase.
This painting is typical of portraits made by Amedeo Modigliani at the end of his life.
It includes the psychological introspection peculiar to the artist with the oval shape of the face and the neck's elongation.
That Modigliani's picture approaches ethnic sculpture and oriental painting, both fashionable at the beginning of the twentieth century.
