René François Ghislain Magritte was born on November 21, 1898, in Lessines, Belgium.He studied art from 1916 at the “Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts” in Brussels.
He began his professional career as a cartoonist in a wallpaper factory.
His first solo exhibition took place in 1927 at the Centaur Gallery in Brussels
That same year he left Brussels to settle near Paris in Le Perreux-Sur-Marne.
He attended the Surrealist group of Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, Jean Arp, André Breton and Paul Eluard.
In 1928, he participated in the Surrealist Exhibition of the Goemans Gallery in Paris.
His fame then became international with numerous exhibitions in Brussels again and in New York, Dallas, Houston, Paris, Rotterdam and Geneva.
He died in Brussels on August 15, 1967.
