Vasily Kandinsky was born in 1866 in Moscow.He began by studying law and economics at Moscow University.
He graduated in 1892 and married his cousin, Ania Tchimiakin, from whom he divorced in 1911.
He had a passion for colour and drawing, but he was already 30 years old in 1896 when he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich.
In 1910 he wrote, "The Spiritual in Art and Painting in specific".
A first book devoted to art where he begins his introduction as follows:
“Every work of art is the child of his time and often the mother of our feelings.
Thus, each cultural era is born an art that is its own and cannot be repeated.
Attempting to revive ancient art principles can only lead to the production of stillborn works.”
Vasily Kandinsky
In 1911, Vasily Kandinsky published the first manifesto of abstract art in Munich.
It is also the year of his encounter and friendship with Paul Klee.
He left Russia in 1921 and moved to Germany, and obtained German citizenship in 1928.
In 1929 he went to Belgium, where he met James Ensor and Marcel Duchamp.
In 1933, the Nazis closed the Bauhaus, and Kandinsky left Germany for France and settled in Neuilly, where he remained until his death.
In 1939 he obtained French nationality.
Vasily Kandinsky died in Neuilly in France, on December 13, 1944.
