Pablo Picasso, whose real name Pablo Ruiz, was born in 1881 in Malaga, Spain.

His father was himself a painter, and Pablo began to draw from an early age.

In 1895, the family moved to Barcelona where Pablo Picasso enrolled in the "Lonja", the Academy of Arts.

In 1900 he went to Paris for the first time, settled there in 1904 and became Guillaume Apollinaire and Max Jacob's friend.

His style evolved rapidly with a so-called blue period, from 1901 to 1904, followed by a so-called pink period in 1905.

His painting of the “Demoiselles d'Avignon” in 1907 was a decisive turning point in his artistic evolution following cubism.

From 1925 to the early 1930s, Picasso turned partly to surrealism and became interested in sculpture from 1931.

In 1936 Pablo Picasso was deeply affected by the Spanish War, whose horrors he represented in his famous painting “Guernica”.

By 1939, Pablo Picasso's reputation was already global with significant exhibitions, including the one held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

In the early 1940s, he left Paris occupied by German troops to settle in the south of France.

In 1944 he became a member of the Communist Party.

At the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, the works exhibited cover a relatively long period of his life, from 1911 with “The Poet” to 1939 with the “Bust of Man in Striped Knit”, including “The Studio” and the magnificent “Swimming on the Beach”.
