Dorothy M. Yoon “This Moment is Magic” Venice Biennale International Art Exhibition
Dorothy M. Yoon born in 1976 in Busan, South Korea, lives and works in Seoul.
His work “This Moment is Magic” comprises 24 magic wands and 7 magic dresses, exhibited at the Venice Art Biennale, at the Swatch Pavilion at the Arsenal.
For Dorothy M. Yoon, her art allows her to sublimate life through imagination.
“My work is a sublimation that integrates pain, illusion, eroticism and spirituality. It is a process of association, one after the other, of these different elements.
When a border between reality and fiction emerges, I interpret it visually.
I was diagnosed with cancer 7 years ago.
My chemotherapy included injections of painkillers.
It not only helped me cope better with the pain, but it also made me feel more alive, as if colours, fireworks, flares were sparkling everywhere inside my body.
In my work, this injection turned into a traditional Korean magic wand with colourful stripes and my chemical effervescence wears the costume of a fairy fighting demons.
“This Moment is Magic” is an idea of time, an “elusive space”, and memory as a real story.
In this magic, technology and science become art, intuition and illusion.
The twelve magic wands refer, on the one hand, to the East, with the signs of the Chinese Zodiac based on the themes of the year and the Earth, and on the other, to the West, with its horoscope based on the themes of the month and the Universe.
Every person living on Earth is connected to one of these 24 zodiac and horoscope signs, it is both instant and eternity.
One day, after a mysterious dream, my mother asked me about my health, and I went to the hospital where they discovered the beginning of cancer.
I am now completely healed, and I feel like I am living a new life.
My art has transformed the memory of pain and suffering into spirituality, so a split second becomes magic or the future.
I hope these moments in our lives become eternal, magical moments that we can sing: This moment is magical!”
