Alexander Calder “Silver Bed Head” at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice
Sculpture, Silver (160 × 131 cm) Winter 1945-46In 1945-46 Peggy Guggenheim asked Alexandre Calder to create a bed head for her, which he did.
This beautiful work, powerful and harmonious, is a fusion of marine and terrestrial worlds represent insects, fish, plants and algae simultaneously.
His different patterns were made from cut and beaten silver leaves.
This treatment of beaten silver creates additional reflections, while the twisting movements of the different shapes.
Their placement, these volutes and curves make this sculpture incredibly alive, it "moves"!
